For Karen Hinton Robinson quilting started as a hobby, but quickly became a second career.
Originally from North Carolina she graduated from East Carolina University with a BSN and later earned her MBA from Webster University. Now, a retired RN, Air Force Veteran, wife and mother of two, Karen has been quilting professionally for more than 20 years. Passionate about documenting and reflecting history, her work captures stories of the past as well as celebrations of present day.
Her community contributions began in the early 2000s with a Black History Quilt that she continues to share as a teaching instrument with local schools, libraries, churches, camps and sororities. Karen’s quilts have been displayed at the Carver Community Cultural Center in San Antonio, the Houston International Quilt Festival and UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. She has also been commissioned to create quilts for the City of San Antonio, St Philip's College, and the historic New Light Missionary Baptist Church.
Karen is a co-founder and past president of the African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio. As an organization, in 2018, they featured a quilt exhibit during the San Antonio Tricentennial which highlighted the contributions of African Americans over the past 300 years.
